Shortly after 9:30am this morning, Whatcom County Public Works Ferry Division announced they had taken the Whatcom Chief out of service.

The reason for the unexpected service interruption was given as a “mechanical issue.” It was not specified whether the issue was with the terminals or with the Whatcom Chief.

Service would be unavailable until at least 11:30am according to the announcement.

A major project to overhaul the electrical and other systems on the terminals is scheduled to occur later this year. The ferry service has been plagued by multiple issues this year ranging from the rudder on the ferry to a bearing on a terminal apron as well as the electrical issues at the terminals.
