A City of Ferndale (COF) contractor has begun staging machinery and equipment for the installation of an underground pipe that will carry stormwater runoff through the former Riverside Golf Course property to the Nooksack River.

According to the COF, the project will install approximately 1,400 feet of pipe and structures within an easement through the property located between Main Street and the Nooksack River. Work includes placement of storm pipe as well as an outfall at the Nooksack River. The new pipe will be connected to an existing storm sewer near Main Street and Riverside Drive.

According to documents submitted to the Hearings Examiner when applying for the project’s Shoreline Substantial Development Permit, “The project is intended to act as a regional conveyance for treated stormwater from both public and private developments and facilities within a stormwater basin that lies both north and south of Main Street, west of Interstate Five.”

COF staff said their first plan to increase stormwater runoff capacity was to improve an existing stormwater ditch and outfall along the west side of I-5. But they were told by Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) representatives that it was no longer an option.

The presence of the construction machinery and equipment on the property west of the Dairy Queen on Riverside Drive drew interest from many neighbors since that vacant lot has been the location of previous permit applications over the past couple years that would result in building a Taco Time. There are no active permits at this time according to the COF permit tracking system. The most recent permit issued was a land disturbance permit that expired last month.
