The Ferndale 12U Cal Ripken team came away with the North Washington Cal Ripken Major 60′ State Championship after beating Ellensburg 11-1 in the championship game during the North Washington State Tournament.
10 teams from around the state competed in the tournament Mount Vernon earlier this month. Coach Bill Hatchett said during the tournament the Ferndale team outscored opponents 89-6, hit 13 homeruns and had a team batting average of .536.
The team came into the state tournament with a 17-1 record, after winning three tournaments leading up to the state tournament. Their current record after the state tournament is 23-1.
The team moves on to the Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament that will be held in Meridian, Idaho, July 19th to the 22nd. They will face other championship teams from South Washington, North Oregon, South Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and British Columbia, Canada. The winner of this tournament will advance to play in the Cal Ripken Major 60′ World Series to be held in Clemmons, North Carolina, August 3rd to the 10th.
The Ferndale team is made up of 12 players, 11 from Ferndale and 1 from Meridian School Districts.
Players are Landen Hatchett #1, Isaiah Carlson #2, Conner Walcker #3, Hunter Jones #5 (Meridian), Andrew James #9, Tipton Bundy #10, Giovanni Contreras #12, Jordan Mason #15, Dylan Strom #17, Jacob Mason #22, Lane Oostra #23, Sean Morrison #24. Coaches are Dean Oostra #19 and Hank Schwarz #33 and team manager is Bill Hatchett #27.
The team will be holding a car wash this Saturday, July 15th, from 10am to 3pm in the parking lot at Ferndale Grocery Outlet. This will be to raise money to offset tournament and travel costs for the team and families.
