Police and aid units responded to a call yesterday at 5pm about a car reported to have crashed into a rock wall on the Ferndale High School campus.
Upon arriving they found a Toyota Camry on a sidewalk in the underclass parking lot next to the tennis courts with its airbags deployed. The car sustained extensive damage to the front-right corner and wheel. The rock wall did not appear to have sustained any damage. there was a trail of debris from the vehicle strewn behind it on the sidewalk.
According to Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko, one person was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Ferndale Police Lieutenant Bill Hatchett said a female in her 60s was driving the Toyota and failed to successfully negotiate a turn and could not give an explanation as to why.
Hatchett explained school grounds are private property so police would only issue citations in such cases when there is evidence of a civil infraction in a public right of way or a criminal driving offense. As such, no civil infractions or criminal citations were issued.
